About us

The International Rescue Committee (IRC) is an international non-governmental organization that was founded in 1933 at the request of Albert Einstein. Since then, the IRC has been supporting people affected by political crises, war, persecution, or natural disasters. The IRC also implements resettlement, asylum, and integration (RAI) programs with and for refugees, asylum seekers and migrants in Germany, Greece, the Western Balkans, Italy, and the UK. IRC Germany was founded in 2016 and is active nationwide in the areas of Education, Economic Wellbeing, as well as Safety, Legal Protection, and Participation.

In view of the increased need for support and advice for Afghan nationals and their family members seeking protection in Germany or hoping for humanitarian admission, IRC Germany expanded its individual case support and advice as well as advocacy work in this area.

To support our Legal Protection Afghanistan team, IRC Germany is looking for an Intern (f/m/d) Safety & Legal Protection Afghanistan in full-time (40 hours per week) for a period of three months starting July 1st, 2024, at the Berlin or Bonn office.

What you will learn with us

• You register the inquiries received by IRC (from Afghans themselves or other involved third parties, e.g. other NGOs) and assist in entering the information into the project tool, which coordinates the assignment and processing of the cases.

• You create case overviews, including the documents submitted/to be submitted for case processing.

• You will develop a sense for case analysis according to the criteria of the Federal Admission Program for Afghanistan, or other reception mechanisms. You will have the opportunity to learn first-hand how a humanitarian admission program is being implemented.

• You support with conducting background research on the human rights situation in Afghanistan and compile the status thereof in various areas of legal protection for refugees.

• You gain insights into the team's networking and advocacy work, bring in ideas, and assist with logistical and programmatic preparations.

• You learn how IRC Germany works in programming and can contribute to the development of proposals.

Your profile

• You are enrolled at a German college or university for the period of the internship and are studying at least in the 3rdsemester of a bachelor’s degree program or a master’s degree program in a relevant subject to the organization.

• You are enthusiastic about working with and for people with migration experience and have ideally already gained practical experience in this area (e.g. through voluntary work).

• You have English language skills at [C1] and German skills at B1 according to theCommon European Framework of Reference for Languages (CERF) (https://www.europaeischer-referenzrahmen.de/) as well as generally good written and verbal communication skills.

• Language skills in Dari / Pashto / Farsi are desirable.

• You are familiar with the MS Office package (Outlook, Word, PowerPoint). Good knowledge of Excel is an advantage.
