Job Description

BACKGROUND: The International Rescue Committee (IRC) responds to the world’s worst humanitarian crises and helps people to survive and rebuild their lives. At work in over 40 countries and 28 U.S. cities to restore safety, dignity and hope, the IRC leads the way from harm to home. The IRC in Atlanta office was established in 1979 and has resettled over 27,000 refugees from 50 countries into the Greater Atlanta area. As the largest refugee resettlement agency in Georgia, the IRC in Atlanta resettles an average of 1,000 refugees into Georgia annually and provides additional services and assistance to another 2,500 refugees and asylees.

SCOPE: The IRC in Atlanta’s Resettlement program provides access to quality, client-centered, comprehensive health care services to refugees and immigrants in the metro Atlanta area through local primary care providers. IRC Atlanta is expected to serve more than 2,000 refugee and immigrant clients per year. Co-location with IRC is impacting the opportunity for the organizations, along with local community agencies, to collaborate to provide wrap around physical and behavioral health, and social services for our clients. This position will focus on working closely with clients and direct staff of both organizations to arrange for and coordinate a variety of client health care services, including specialist appointments. This is a 37.5 hour per week position.

PLEASE NOTE:This position is a Notre Dame Mission Volunteer (NDMV) AmeriCorps position. AmeriCorps oversight will be conducted through NDMV of Atlanta, and the IRC will serve as a site placement. Upon interview and selection by the IRC, the candidate will need to complete the AmeriCorps application process through the NDMV site liaison.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Introduce IRC in Atlanta and health related services to newly arrived clients during Cultural Orientation

  • Teach clients how to schedule health care appointments, access local providers; and how to effectively participate in health care appointments with providers; and how to schedule medicated transportation services.

  • Transport clients to and from doctor appointment if needed

  • Submit a case aide request for transportation and interpretation services

  • Work with IRC staff to identify newly arrived clients for primary health care appointments and needed specialty care

  • Develop and implement tracking system for client primary care and specialist appointments

  • Coordinate and ensure access to transportation and interpretation for health care appointments

  • Conduct client interviews to assess satisfaction with health care services received

  • Coordinate with local health care providers to ensure clients have access to culturally appropriate services

  • Design and implement relevant and culturally appropriate health education materials

  • Maintain open and effective communication with other IRC programs as appropriate

  • Actively participate in regularly scheduled staff meetings

  • Other duties as assigned

    Qualifications

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Fluent spoken and written English; additional languages spoken a plus

  • Undergraduate degree preferred

  • Background in public health, nursing or social work, a plus

  • Demonstrated ability to take initiative, attentive-to-detail and work independently

  • Demonstrated experience working in a cross-cultural environment with vulnerable populations proficiency in Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, Outlook

  • Valid driver’s license and reliable vehicle with current insurance a plus
